Since I started on the Internet in 1996 I have have found that to have a successful business web site you need three web sites:

  • a web site designed for search engines
  • a web site designed for marketing
  • a web site designed for sales

Three web sites?

No, but to achieve these three things, your web site may need Search engine optimization & marketingsome professional Internet marketing restructuring. And most web designers I come across, while technically very good at web design, have little experience in designing professional sales web sites.

Whether you want people to

  • buy a product,
  • make an enquiry,
  • subscribe to your newsletter,
  • download some information or
  • visit a specific area of your web site,
you need your web site visitors to take the appropriate action.

Mistakes people make
  • One of the cardinal mistakes people make is to think that Internet marketing starts after one designed one's web site.
  • Another mistake is to get some person who dabbles in web site design to do the site on the cheap - their son's 10 year old friend or their friend's wife or some kid with a college diploma in graphic design (although they often aren't cheap)

    A typical example is the school where my sister-in-law works as the computer teacher - after using parents, and parents friends and after five years they still do not have an effective web site, they want to send my sister-in-law on a web design course so that she can design the web site.

    All because they do not want to pay a professional to design the site for them!

    Does this make sense?
  • However, the primary mistake is to have their web sites designed without the help of an Internet marketing professional, either in an advisory capacity or to run the web marketing project for you.
Three Easy Steps

For your web site to be more effective you need to look at:
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and effectiveness: Is your web site designed to rank well on the major global and local search engines?
  • Marketing structure and design: Is your web site designed to be user friendly - loading fast, easy to navigate, easy to find stuff?
  • Focus on sales conversion: Is your web site's sales copy designed to easily channel visitors to the pages that matter most - your "sales" pages and to convert visitors to prospects and to customers?

O.K. Maybe not so easy for everyone, unless you have a reasonable knowledge of web design.
